Wayne Matson
From an early age, Wayne always wanted to be an inventor and creator of things. As a child, you’d find him building go-carts and huts in his back yard or at his Dad’s garage.
His first taste of becoming a handyman happened when he purchased his first home at 19 and built a garage, closed in a patio and built a playhouse for the kids. When he sold this house, he then embarked on building a large 5-bedroom house with the help of a contracted builder. Once the structural elements were in place, Wayne took over the entire project, installing and finishing all the interior elements – the walls and ceiling, and kitchen and bathroom. Later on in life, Wayne got into flipping houses – buying, renovating and reselling houses in Auckland.
Wayne has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. When he was young he’d collect newspapers and sell them to the local fish and chip shop, bag up plums off the plum tree and sell them to the neighbours, and collect old, broken radios which he could fix or make into something else to sell.
At the age of 20, Wayne started his first business, in electronics components and repairs which led him to become the first Dick Smith distributor in New Zealand.
His business then moved into importing and distributing electronics and electronic components which he supplied to some of the largest appliance manufacturers in New Zealand.
After selling this business to a corporate organisation in Australia, Wayne started supporting small businesses as a business and marketing mentor. Eventually, his passion for handyman work resulted in Wayne starting Hire a Handyman, first as a one-man band, and now as a franchise network.
Wayne has a true passion for handyman work and has built Hire a Handyman to help people who need it. He’s driven by wanting to make a small difference in others lives and giving them a renewed sense of pride and joy about their home.
